If you wish to buy a TiVo you have the following starting points:
George at www.eksys.com used to sell many refurbished TiVo's but unfortunately his stocks of supply have mostly dried up. He does however sell the odd one now and then on USA eBay under his eBay ID "eklecticsystems". Alternatively George is now offering to take delivery, test and onship "will ship to USA only" Ebay listed units - but consult him first before purchase for postal costs, options, etc. George's website has a live list of suitable TiVo's for sale on Ebay where the seller is either prepared to directly ship to Australia/NZ or is willing to ship to George for forwarding.
USA eBay at www.ebay.com has stacks of suitable TiVo's (more on what a "suitable TiVo" is below) or alternatively you can try your luck on the Australian eBay site at www.ebay.com.au which every now and then has the odd one listed but never on the scale that the USA eBay has.
Every now and then someone will post on the OzTiVo email list and/or the OzTiVo forums "For Sale" area that one is for sale. Keep a regular check on these sites and one will turn up.
NOTE: Hobotech and TiVo Down Under no longer sell TiVo's. There is no longer an official Australian seller of TiVo units.
What TiVo's are suitable?
Remember: not all Series 1 TiVo's are compatible for our needs. Philips HDR-x12 series (ie 112,212,312,612,etc), PTV-100, PTV-300 and Sony SVR-2000 are suitable. Yes that is correct: The Sony SVR-2000 is suitable - in fact they have the exact same internals as the Philips TiVo's and with the newer OzTiVo images even the Sony remote works fine so there is no reason not to buy the Sony's if you like the look of them over a Philips. I often get asked what the difference is between the Philips HDR 112,212,312,612 and PTV models. The answer is nothing as far as we are concerned. The model numbers relate to the original factory fitted hard disk size but because they are all what is considered small by today's standards you are most likely going to replace the old (and most likely worn out) original had disk with something new and much bigger anyway. You can buy a UK Thompson TiVo but these are usually a lot more expensive and not widely used in Australia so support is very limited, but they do work and have internal PAL tuner already and do work fine with the OzTiVo software.
What about the voltage difference between USA and Australia/New Zealand?
Luckily for us ALL Series 1 TiVo's that are suitable for use here have universal power supplies that can handle all voltages from 90 Volts to 265 Volts and both 50 and 60 Hertz AC frequencies. Australia and New Zealand are within this range so simply use a power cable with a suitable plug that will fit into our power outlets and away you go. If required I do sell suitable power cables in my Spare Parts section.
What TiVo's are NOT suitable?
DO NOT buy a "DirectTV" type (DSR-6000 and others) as these are for the USA pay-TV system and not suitable at all for us. DO NOT buy a Sony SVR-3000 as this is actually a Series 2 TiVo and not suitable (see the section called "Series 2 TiVo In Oz" why Series 2 is not suitable). If you are unsure then you are quite welcome to email me with a link to the TiVo you are looking at and I'm quite happy to let you know if it is suitable or not.
Do I Sell TiVo's?
